5 Teen Movies Based On Literature

Need some movie ideas for the weekend? Here are five fun possibilities:
1. Clueless and Emma

A classic. Do I need to say more? As if!

2. Ten Things I Hate About You and Taming of the Shrew

Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are together in a film that features music from Letters from Cleo and Savage Garden. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing.  Also, there’s this.

3. Cruel Intentions and  Les Liasons dangereuses

This movie is absolutely brilliant. Reese Witherspoon exudes innocence, and Ryan Phillipe is magnetic. In this film, Sarah Michelle Gellar does not slay vampires; she is one (this is metaphoric–one needs this disclaimer in a post-Twilight world).

4. Easy A and The Scarlet Letter

Okay, this one is really obvious, but it is still a lot of fun. The lines in the movie are really witty, and who doesn’t love Emma Stone?

5. Romeo + Juliet and Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet set in Venice Beach, CA with Clare Danes in angel wings? Children in a choir singing “When Doves Cry?” What is not to love about this movie?

Four of these movies were made in the 1990s. Good times for teens and lit.
